Park-starved Mission Valley can look forward to a new public playland by early 2017 now that construction has begun at the 14.3-acre Civita Park.

The $2 billion master-planned community, begun by Sudberry Properties in 2010, is located north of Friars Road between Mission Center Road and Qualcomm Way. At buildout over the next 15 years, it will encompass 4,780 housing units, 480,000 square feet of retail and 420,000 square feet of offices.

The $15 million first phase of the park will contain 10 acres of play fields, two basketball half-courts, a community garden, rose gardens, an outdoor grassy amphitheater and a 100-foot flagpole as a tribute to the military.
