Committee on Urban Public Social Spaces (San Diego)

Mission

Our mission is to establish more socially-oriented public spaces in urban communities throughout San Diego County.  

The Committee on Urban Public Social Spaces (CUPSS) is a brand-new committee within the San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (SDASLA).  It’s mission is to establish more socially-oriented public spaces in urban communities throughout San Diego County.  Urban public spaces, in the way of plazas, promenades, complete streets, and mini parks, contribute to human mental wellbeing by providing the optimal location to host regular social interactions.

Goals

  • Find candidate locations via GIS methodology or local knowledge and outreach to key stakeholders.

  • Raise the profile of landscape architecture through more public space projects.

  • Educate the public, business owners, elected officials and government staff on the value of urban public spaces for human beings, communities and economic vitality.

  • Promote the proven science of optimal planning and design of successful socially-oriented urban public spaces.

  • Support and collaborate with programs that aim to achieve our mission.

  • Place more value on communities that need these spaces the most.

  • Understand the legal challenges of establishing public spaces in municipalities throughout San Diego county.
